How does the patronal feast of San Nicola di Bari take place?
The feast, in addition to representing a moment of tradition and union, is an opportunity to renew and strengthen the Christian faith and to affirm the importance of the Saint in his city and throughout the world.
For almost a millennium, the Basilica of San Nicola, with its tomb, has been a constant pilgrimage destination for Christians and Orthodox, to celebrate the saint who unites East and West.
On May 7 iThe picture of the Saint is taken aboard a fishing boat from San Giorgio bay, the place where according to tradition the sailors arrived with the remains, to the small port of Bari and here it is delivered to then be conducted later in the historical procession.
This very ancient tradition recalls the arrival of the remains of the Saint who came from the sea with a parade of figures and flag-wavers who accompany the caravel with the painting of the Saint along the way along the streets of the old city which reaches the Basilica at the end of the procession. where he meets the faithful and pilgrims. The historical procession is a significant anniversary and is the most documented in Christian history.
May 8th it is the day of the procession at sea: the statue of San Nicola crosses the streets of the city, up to the port where it is embarked on a fishing boat that will host it for the whole day, surrounded by a coming and going of boats that arrive to honor the Saint.
The 9 May it is celebrated on the day of the translation of the relics and of the arrival in Bari. The Eucharistic celebration and the prayer of the faithful takes place in the cathedral so that the prodigy of the Manna" or "Myron" can manifest itself.
Every year the Rector of the Basilica withdraws a liquid (Manna) that oozes from the bones of the Saint, which is placed in an ampoule for exposure to the faithful, as a symbol of renewed protection and Blessing of the Saint. An intense moment of emotion and prayer.
